Job Posting Description
Under administrative direction of the Director, Environmental Health and Safety with regulatory accountability to the Executive Radiation Safety Committee, develops, implements and oversees the enterprise’s x-ray safety program in compliance with state and federal regulations and Joint Commission requirements. Oversees all aspects of radiation safety within the hospital and satellite locations.
This X-Ray Safety Officer will be responsible to:
- Prepare a variety of recurring financial transactions, reports, and analyses related to the hospital operating financial statement and balance sheet including intercompany activity, and other sub ledger activity and schedules in accordance with generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP).
- Oversee operating, emergency, and ALARA procedures as required by MA law in 105 CMR 120.200, and review procedures regularly to ensure that the procedures are current and conform to agency regulations and to the license or registration.
- Provide acceptance and routine quality control testing on x-ray producing equipment at any BCH location. Develop and submit of shielding plans for new X-ray producing equipment to the Commonwealth of MA Radiation Control Program (MA RCP) of the DPH for approval.
- Develop, implement, maintain, monitor and audit programs to test and ensure that all X-ray producing equipment is in safe operating condition.
- Develop and implement x-ray safety training for physicians, fellows, residents and staff using x-ray producing equipment at BCH.
- Ensure that personnel are complying with 105 CMR 120.000, the conditions of the license or the registration, and the operating and emergency procedures of the licensee or registrant. Oversee personnel monitoring and lead PPE testing programs.
- Oversee the personnel and patient dose monitoring programs for external radiation. Provide clinical radiation dosimetry calculations in support of research and regulatory requirements within the institution including dose estimates for IRB studies.
- Investigate and reports each known or suspected case reportable incident to the DPH/RCP (DPH and Radiation Control Program) including any radiation exposure or above limit radiation level and each theft or loss of source(s) of radiation. Determine the cause and to take steps to prevent recurrence.
- Keep abreast of changes in technology and standards. Attend seminars and training sessions necessary to obtain continuing educational credits for maintenance of certification
To qualify, you must have:
- A Master’s or Ph.D. degree in Medical Physics, Radiological Physics, Health Physics or a closely related field plus a min of 5 years’ experience participating in scientific research projects.
- Board certification by the American Board of Radiology, American Board of Medical Physics or the American Board of Health Physics is preferred but not required.
- Analytical skills to resolve highly complex problems requiring the application of scientific or technical principles, theories and concepts and in-depth, experienced based cross functional knowledge.
- Knowledge and ability to operate electronic test equipment such as dosimeters, oscilloscopes, DVMs, etc. while testing the performance of imaging equipment.
- Ability to participate in scientific research leading to publication in referred journals.
- Expertise with advanced computer applications including word processing, spreadsheets, databases, presentations, mathematical analysis, and image analysis.
