What does the Medical Physicist do?

The Medical Physicist is responsible for the design optimization, technical evaluation, and precise and accurate delivery of radiation treatment plans. Responsible for the safety of patients and staff. May participate in clinical, research and educational duties. Supports and adheres to the US Oncology Compliance Program, to include the Code of Ethics and Business Standards.

Facilities and Equipment:

The Texas Oncology Midland practice provides a full range of external beam radiation therapy procedures.  Equipment in use at the Midland locations includes 1 Varian 21iX Clinac, GE PET/CT, MOSAIQ ROIS, Eclipse, and RadCalc used to treat 30 patients per day.  The successful candidate will join our team of 5 board certified radiation oncologists, 5 board certified medical physicists, 6 dosimetrists, 12 radiation therapist, 5 chief radiation therapists, and 6 CT technicians.  All sites share a single database for ROIS, treatment planning, 2nd check program, and SNC SunCHECK. QA tools include, but are not limited to Profiler2, MapCheck2, SNC Routine, and 3D scanning system.

The ideal candidate for the Medical Physicist will have the following background and experience:

• Master’s degree in Medical physics from a CAMPEP accredited college or university.
• Graduate from a CAMPEP accredited residency program.
• ABR board certification or in the process of obtaining certification (e.g. new resident graduate).
• Eligibility for a Texas license.
• Experience with SRS, SBRT, and HDR strongly preferred.
• Strong organization and oral / written communication skills.

• Eclipse
• MOSAIQ Radiation Oncology Information System
• HDR, SBRT and SRS procedures
• Radiation safety

As an integral part of Texas Oncology, you will appreciate the opportunity to corroborate with other network physicists eager to share their expertise.  Texas Oncology provides many vendor webinars, journal club and opportunities to serve on physics’ committees.  Additionally, the successful candidate will have the potential to working with the current physicist who is set to retire in late July 2021.  The overlap will allow the successful candidate to be trained on the Texas Oncology-Midland processes and procedures by a highly qualified and respected physicist.

The essential duties and responsibilities:

• Full range of on-site clinical medical physics support.
• Occasional on-site or remote physics support for sites within the region.
• Determines the need for, specifies, and accesses dosimeter and treatment planning equipment including, but not limited to, measurement instruments to calibrate all treatment equipment and monitoring devices, computerized treatment planning systems, computerized water phantom systems with appropriate ionization chambers and diodes, film densitometry systems, etc.
• Advises and consults with physicians to provide advice or direction to technical staff when patients are being planned or treated.

The successful candidate will have the following minimum qualifications:

• Master’s degree in Medical physics from an accredited college or university.
• ABR board certification (or equivalent) or have completed a CAMPEP approved residency, be board eligible and be in the process of obtaining certification by the American Board of Radiology
• Eligibility for a Texas license
• Minimum of 2 years of experience
• Willing to consider an entry- or mid-level candidate with strong clinical background.
• A working knowledge of SRS, SBRT, and HDR
• Experience with Varian linear accelerators as well as Nucletron/Oncentra
• Strong organization and oral / written communication skills
• The ability to travel on an occasional, as needed, basis
