Northern Light Health located in Brewer, ME is seeking a full-time Medical Physicist to join our Radiation Oncology department. Our clinic is located in the heart of Maine with your choice of city or rural life. Weekend adventures include nearby Acadia National Park, Katahdin Woods and Waters National Park, Baxter State Park, Northern Terminus of the Appalachian Trail, Coastal Towns, Skiing (Sugarloaf, Sunday River, Saddleback), Snowmobiling, Hiking, Fishing, Hunting, Boating, and much more. The successful candidate will work in a radiation oncology department which will consist of 5 full-time radiation oncologists, 4 medical physicists, 4 dosimetrists, 1 medical physics assistant, approx. 15 therapists, 1 nurse practitioner, and supporting staff.

The physics QA devices include:
Complete suite of new Sun Nuclear equipment: ArcCheck, IC Profiler, DailyQA3, and 1D and 3D water phantom scanning systems; Standard Imaging's Lucy SRS Phantom; RIT film/image analysis software; and a complete collection of calibration and scanning detectors, electrometers, and other QA Phantoms.
EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS:
Masters (or PhD, DSc, DMP) in Medical Physics is required.
LICENSE REQUIREMENTS:
Board certification in Therapeutic Medical Physics by American Board of Radiology or equivalent.
or
Board certification eligible in Therapeutic Medical Physics by American Board of Radiology
(completed CAMPEP Medical Physics Residency, passed ABR Part2, & eligible for ABR Part3)
SKILLS/EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:
The position requires an understanding of radiation physics, anatomy, physiology, clinical oncology, radiobiology, radiation safety, and radiation QA equipment.
Good verbal and written communication and computer skills are essential.
Candidates with any programming skills with Visual Basic and/or Python is advantageous but not required.
AVAILABILITY REQUIREMENTS:
Ten hours per day, four days per week with rotating day off.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES:
Supports all aspects of quality management program and radiation safety. Provide support and oversight to dosimetry staff. The position carries the implicit responsibility to apply regulations, standards and guidelines of the following agencies, commissions and organizations which have mandated, or otherwise recommended, the specific activities and documentation:
American Association of Physicists in Medicine (AAPM) for radiation oncology physics.
American Society for Radiation Oncology (ASTRO) best practice and quality guidelines.
State of Maine Radiation Control Program inspections of facility and records
Assists with The Joint Commission inspections of facility and records
Accreditation Program for Excellence (APEx) compliance
General medical physics support will include, but is not limited to, participation in commissioning, upgrade, repair, acceptance testing, monthly and annual QA of treatment equipment, clinical troubleshooting, initial and weekly patient chart checks, treatment planning assistance, patient specific QA review, and SRS/SRT/HDR treatment planning, and other routine clinical physics responsibilities.
PHYSICAL DEMAND REQUIREMENTS:
Must possess mobility to travel between various sections of the department/hospital/cancer center.
Must possess manual dexterity to grasp and manipulate large/small objects, thick/thin objects, use a computer keyboard and calculator, and use writing implements such as pens, pencils, markers, etc.
Must be able to sit approximately 50% of working hours.
Must possess visual acuity necessary to read digital/electronic readouts, and to discern information from computers, calculators, electronic controls, printed documents, charts, and diagrams.
Must be able to wear a lead protective apron weighing approximately 10 pounds when required.
Must be able to lift equipment weighing approximately 50 pounds.
Must be able to move within narrow, confined areas, etc.
Potentially hazardous equipment and materials. Understands safety and risks involved with ionizing radiation, high voltage electrical equipment, and electronic equipment.
Confined and changing work area in varied lighting conditions.
Strong odors, varying temperatures, and noise levels.
Potential exposure to patients with communicable diseases, purulent discharges, secretions, and excretions.
