The department of Radiation Oncology at Mayo Clinic in Arizona invites applications for the position of Medical Physicist in the Photon Clinic.
About the department:
The Physics Division supports an expanding clinical practice consisting of fifteen radiation oncology physicians and four radiation oncology residents. The Physics Division and its associated groups includes seventeen physicists, four medical physicist assistants, four physics residents, two IT project analysts, two software developers, two linac engineers, and two postdoctoral researchers. The clinical practice consists of a proton clinic with four Hitachi pencil beam scanning gantries and a photon clinic with four Varian linear accelerators, a mobile electron accelerator for intraoperative radiation therapy and an HDR afterloader.
The photon clinic has four TrueBeams, two of which have ExacTrac systems and HyperArc licenses. The clinic supports a robust linac-based SRS/SBRT program, Total Body Irradiation, Partial/Total Skin Electron Treatment, respiratory gating and motion management, IORT, GRID therapy, HDR, and LDR eye plaques and gamma tile programs. The practice uses Aria R&V with Eclipse and Raystation treatment planning systems. All TrueBeams have AlignRT Surface Guidance systems which are actively used to minimize the use of tattoos in the clinical practice. MIM and Velocity are available for image processing tasks. 3D printing facilities are available and used for bolus and electron shield manufacturing. Multiyear service contracts ensure that clinical systems are continually updated.
About the job:
Successful applicant will join a team of eight physicists dedicated to the photon clinic, treating over 1200 patients per year. This position combines clinical service in the photon clinic with an expectation of significant contributions to the Research Development and Residency Education programs of the Physics Division, in keeping with the Mayo Clinic three-shield mission: Patient Care, Research, and Education. Mayo Clinic is committed to maintaining the highest quality of patient care, and thus strong commitment to clinical service is a paramount requirement for this position.
Many opportunities for clinical and research collaboration exist between the three ACR accredited Mayo Clinic sites and locally through the Mayo Clinic and Arizona State University Alliance for Health Care. A Medical Physics Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship, sponsored by Mayo Clinic is also hosted every year. Current research interests include clinical applications of Artificial Intelligence, adaptive treatment planning in the proton and photon clinics, modelling of clinical outcomes in photon and proton clinics, 3D printing and molding, automation and integration of clinical practice and patient database. Prior research and development experience in the above-mentioned areas is strongly preferred. The Physics Division and the Department are always interested in the development of new treatment approaches that enhance the patient care. While this position is dedicated to clinical service in the photon clinic, collaborations on joint projects with the proton clinic is also encouraged.
The candidate will have a PhD in Medical Physics or related field, American Board of Radiology certification in Therapeutic Medical Physics with participation in MoC. A minimum of five years of experience post residency and a significant research experience are strongly preferred.
Over the next four years, Mayo Clinic is making significant investments in both the physical and technological future of health care, through doubling the size of the Mayo Clinic campus in Phoenix, inclusive of practice, education, and research activities. Mayo Clinic's campuses in Arizona are located in Phoenix and Scottsdale, in the beautiful Sonoran Desert. The region is known as the Valley of the Sun, a metropolitan area with more than 4 million residents in 25 cities and towns.
Scottsdale frequently earns praise as a highly desirable place to live. The city's more than 200,000 residents enjoy a vibrant mix of culinary hot spots, arts and entertainment, professional and collegiate sports teams, and community resources. The region's desert climate promotes an outdoor lifestyle with a full complement of sports and recreation.
Phoenix is the capital the most populous city in Arizona with 1.6 million residents as of 2020. It is also the fifth-most populous city in the United States.
Summer (the elephant in the room) does get toasty, but there are many resorts, splashpads, museums, and indoor entertainment venues to keep up with even the most active lifestyle. The fall, winter, and spring are ideal for hiking, outdoor sports, and enjoying a meal with friends on the patio. We have an average of 300 sunny days per year, and there is no shortage of arts, culture, sports and fun.
We are proud of our four major-league sports teams, that we host MLB spring training, are home to a world-class collectible car auction and are a PGA tour stop. We are also home to five members of the Fortune 500, and economic potential abounds.
Arizona has three national parks (Grand Canyon, Petrified Forest, Saguaro), four national monuments, and many state parks. In the winter you will find staff skiing in Flagstaff or at Sunrise Peak, and in the summer those high elevations are refreshingly cool. If you prefer the beach, San Diego or Los Angeles are only 5 hours of drive away.
