The University of Science and Technology of China (USTC) is a prominent university in China and enjoys an excellent reputation worldwide. It was established by the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) in 1958. CAS integrated its resources with USTC, with the aim of educating top talents in cutting-edge, interdisciplinary science and technology. The establishment of USTC was hailed as “a great event in the history of education and science of China”.
School of Physical Sciences of USTC consists of Physics, Modern Physics, Optics and Optical Engineering, Astronomy, Engineering and Applied Physics, Physics Experiment Teaching Center. Its honorary dean is Mr. Chen Ning Yang, the Nobel Prize laureate. School of Physical Sciences has become one of the top centers for physics research and education. In the year of 2022, School of Physical Sciences published 7 papers in the top journals of Nature and Science. In the recent 5 years, there were more than 200 high quality papers published in top physical journals such as Physical Review Letters and Medical Physics.
The medical physics research center at USTC was established in 2016. It is an interdisciplinary research center integrating science, engineering, biology and medicine, and jointly supported by the School of Physical Sciences, the First Affiliated Hospital of USTC and the Hefei Ion Medical Center equipped with Varian 5-room proton therapy facility. The research fields of the Center mainly include radiotherapy physics, medical imaging physics, and radiation biophysics. In recent years, researchers have made innovative achievements in multimodal imaging, dual-energy CT, precision small animal IGRT, and AI-assisted diagnostics and radiation therapy treatment planning. The center has cutting-edge experimental platforms for translational cancer research, such as microCT, microMRI, optical molecular imaging, and precision small animal IGRT, and is supported by state-of-the-art clinical facilities, such as 3 CT simulators, 2 MRI simulators, Varian and Elekta LINACs, and 5-room Varian proton facility.
