The Thompson Cancer Survival Center (TCSC) is looking for an outstanding medical physicist to join the radiation oncology team at Covenant Health, which is the largest nonprofit provider of radiation therapy services in the state of Tennessee. This opening is for a staff medical physics position at the Thompson Proton Center (TPC).
Primary clinical responsibilities include, but are not limited to, complex proton pencil beam scanning treatment plan optimization, treatment planning consults and evaluation, patient immobilization evaluation and implementation, respiration motion management, weekly patient chart checks, and machine quality assurance. The Proton Medical Physicist will work in collaboration with therapists, physicians, physicists, dosimetrists and machine vendors to facilitate the operation of the clinic.
The successful candidate will join a team of four board certified medical physicists, two medical physics assistants, and five medical dosimetrists. The Thompson Proton Center treats between 40 and 65 patients per day on an IBA Proteus Plus three-room proton therapy clinic (2 gantries and 1 fixed beam). The department uses RayStation, Velocity, Mosaiq, Radformation, IBA dosimetry products, and has a generous supply of medical physics equipment.
The Thompson Cancer Survival Center has a long history of conducting original clinical research and training of medical physicists. The Department of Radiation Oncology is the primary clinical site for a CAMPEP accredited Medical Physics Graduate program and houses a CAMPEP accredited Medical Physics residency program. Educational/research responsibilities include instructing medical physics graduate students, training medical physics residents, and participating in clinical research.
The larger Covenant Health Medical Physics Team includes 14 ABR physicists, 4 physics assistants, 12 certified dosimetrists, 2 medical physics residents, and numerous graduate students from the CAMPEP program at the University of Tennessee. Covenant Health currently has 5 Varian linacs, 4 Elekta linacs, 3 Flexitron HDR systems, a GammaKnife Icon, an IBA Proteus Plus three-room proton therapy clinic (2 gantries and 1 fixed beam), and a separate ProNova 230 MeV cyclotron with a non-clinical research beam-line that has been used for radiation effects testing.
