Sidney Kimmel Medical College at Thomas Jefferson University is now accepting applications for a Faculty Medical Physicist in the Department of Radiation Oncology. The department is seeking a highly motivated individual to join Jefferson’s dynamic, collegiate, and expanding physics team.
Department Portfolio
The Thomas Jefferson Medical Physics Division consists of 25 physicists, a computational physicist, 7 physics residents, and 2 post-doctoral research fellows (with on-going recruitment for 2 more post-doctoral fellows). The Medical Physics division has 6 locations: the Bodine Center for Cancer Treatment in Center City Philadelphia, Jefferson Hospital for Neuroscience, Asplundh Cancer Pavilion, Torresdale Hospital, Jefferson New Jersey, and Einstein Health. System-wide equipment includes Varian and Elekta Linacs, a ViewRay MRI-Linac (with plans to commission a second MRI-Linac), an Elekta Gamma Knife, and Elekta’s brachytherapy studio including the first ImagingRing in the country. Treatment planning is performed mainly with Eclipse and MOSAIQ is used for record and verify. The department has established a growing Theranostics program.
Jefferson physics faculty lead a highly-impactful and diverse research program. The group currently has on-going funded projects by the National Cancer Institute, vendor funded research, as well as Sidney Kimmel Cancer Center funding. Research topics include functional imaging, AI and machine learning, multi-lesion SRS, MR-guided radiation therapy, advanced brachytherapy, radionuclide dosimetry, and physics-lead clinical trials. The group has active collaborations with the Jefferson physician faculty, on-going national and international research projects, and is part of the NCI Quantitative Imaging Network. Physics research support consists of IT professionals, clinical trial research coordinators, a 3D print lab, and grant management specialists.
Jefferson's Division of Medical Physics has a long-standing history of educating trainees. The department contains a Medical Physics Residency Program and is active in teaching the Medical Physics and Radiation Oncology residents.
Positional overview
We are recruiting for a Medical Physics Faculty position to the Center City Philadelphia campus (which currently has 13 physicists). The successful candidate will be expected to perform standard Medical Physics tasks and commissioning projects, contribute to a specialty program (SRS, brachytherapy, MRI-Linac), perform peer-reviewed research, and teach in the Medical Physics and medical residencies. Dedicated research time will be provided.
A Ph.D in Medical Physics is required for this position. The ideal candidate will be an excellent communicator, be rigorous in their clinical work, have a strong ambition to perform impactful research, and be enthusiastic about participating in the educational programs. We encourage new graduates as well as more experienced physicist to apply. A formal clinical and research mentorship plan is in place and program lead positions may be available for qualified candidates.
