ABOUT THEDACARE RADIATION ONCOLOGY:

The Radiation Oncology Department at ThedaCare is located within a state-of the-art, award-winning comprehensive cancer center in Appleton, WI. The Cancer program adheres to best practices and evidence-based treatment techniques, and includes a large progressive research and clinical trials program. ASTRO APEx accreditation of the Radiation Oncology program is pending the successful site visit in June 2022. 55-70 patients per day are treated on two Varian True Beam linear accelerators (2015), Accuary CyberKnife S7 robotic accelerator (2020), and a Nucletron microSelectron HDR after-loader. The department also has a new Canon Aquilion Exceed Large Bore CT simulator (2021), RIT QA analysis software, MIM software, Radformation’s ClearCheck software, and a generous supply of medical physics equipment. The successful candidate will join an experienced team of two other Medical Physicists, four Dosimetrists, and four Radiation Oncologists.  ABR certification (or equivalent) in Therapeutic Medical Physics is required. Candidates with Cyberknife stereotactic experience, HDR brachytherapy experience, and skills and the ability to serve as system administrator for ARIA and Eclipse treatment planning applications are highly desirable.

KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES

1. Assists the radiation oncologist and follows procedures for handling, storage, and inventory of radioactive sources in compliance with state requirements.

2. Provides consultation to the radiation oncologists in initial planning, simulation, and techniques of external radiotherapy.

3. Applies crucial thinking to assess, plan, develop, implement, and evaluate a quality assurance program for radiation–producing equipment and sources. Assists in the creation of individualized treatment plans for the delivery of radiation therapy.

4. Utilizes evidence-based practice to anticipate expected patient outcomes that support the prescription delivery.

5. Reviews patient records on a weekly basis and at the end of treatment to monitor the treatment process. Provides consultation to solve diverse problems arising in specific patient treatment situations.

6. Is responsible for the radiation quality control program, record keeping and disposal of radioactive materials, annual system program audits, commissioning, verification, and data management of treatment planning. Exemplifies quality care by anticipating and intervening in area of patient safety in compliance with the regulations and guidelines of the State of Wisconsin, NRC, FDA, AAPM, and The Joint Commission.

7. Develops, educates, and revises radiation safety policies and procedures at the department and system levels.

8. Demonstrates leadership skills by providing expertise in the field of radiation and coordinating daily operational activities. Is able to be flexible and adapt to the rapidly changing needs of the patients, department, and technology.

QUALIFICATIONS

• Master’s degree in medical physics

• ABR board certification, or eligible

• Experience as required for board eligibility

• Must achieve ABR within two years

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

• 3+ years of therapeutic medical physics experience in Radiation Oncology
• Stereotactic Radiotherapy experience (Cyberknife preferred)
• HDR brachytherapy experience (Nucletron preferred)
• Experience with Varian/Eclipse/ARIA platform preferred

ADDITIONAL SKILLS:

• Strong computer skills and experience with Microsoft Office software.

• Ability to use good judgment and work independently, with little supervision, and in a team setting.
• The flexibility to adapt to an ever-changing fast-paced environment.

Physical Demands:

• Ability to move freely (standing, stooping, walking, bending, pushing, and pulling) and lift up to a maximum of twenty-five (25) pounds without assistance

• May be exposed to blood borne pathogens (blood or bodily fluids) while performing job duties

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

• Normally works in climate controlled office environment

• Possible exposure to communicable diseases, hazardous materials, and pharmacological agents.
