Essential Responsibilities:

Serves as the assigned area medical health physicist to one or more medical areas within the SCal region
Visit assigned area at least monthly
Attend the area radiation safety committee meetings
Follow duties described in Appendix H6.2 of the Regional Radiation Safety Manual
Provides surveys, reports and consultation related to radiation safety for applicable facilities and/or patients that meet the organizations and regulatory standards in a timely manner.
Equipment Performance Evaluations
Shielding designs, evaluation of shielding integrity and radiation scatter surveys
Develops and implements quality assurance and evaluation programs for applicable diagnostic imaging equipment that ensure high quality images and that meet regulatory requirements.
Supports the Regional RSO
Monitors and reports quality assurance activities to insure adherence to established QA policies and procedures.
Evaluates and reports the performance of this equipment in a timely manner and makes recommendations to improve quality.
Maintains up-to-date technical knowledge of new and developing technologies and regulatory issues to support clinical and administrative decision-makers.
Provides in-service training to staff and physicians, as necessary, to insure high quality images and treatments, a radiation-safe environment, and compliance with regulatory standards.
Communicates to staff, physicians and patients in a manner that is precise, understandable, timely, constructive, and proactive and demonstrates excellent listening skills.
Maintains working relationships that are professional, collaborative, team-oriented, responsive, thorough, cordial and that demonstrate flexibility, innovation, a broad view of issues, acceptance of full responsibility for assignments, and a solutions orientation.
Supervises training of resident and Level 1 medical physicists
May contribute to department projects as a subject matter expert on regulatory, accreditation, and radiation safety issues
May participate in committees within the organization at the following levels: medical center, regional and national level

Basic Qualifications:

Experience

Minimum three (3) years of postgraduate degree experience in medical physics.

Education

Master's degree or Ph.D. in medical physics or a related field (degree requirements waived if candidate meets certification requirements.)

License, Certification, Registration

For the subfield of Diagnostic Medical Physics, certification by:
The American Board of Radiology; or
The American Board of Medical Physics; or
The Canadian College of Physicists in Medicine.
Diagnostic Medical Physicist:
Certified in the subfield of diagnostic medical physics

Additional Requirements:

Must maintain their certification in the applicable sub-specialty with the ABR. Failure to do so will result in termination of employment. A physicist's manager can waive this requirement under special circumstances for a period of up to 12 months if the physicist is making acceptable progress on the requirements for renewal of their certification.
Experience in evaluating performance of diagnostic imaging systems.
Experience in evaluating radiation safety status of machine and radioactive materials sources of ionizing radiation.
Experience in designing, implementing, and monitoring quality assurance programs in diagnostic imaging.
Qualified to perform mammography surveys under MQSA
Qualified to support ACR and TJC accreditation programs in imaging
General knowledge of medical radiation physics, medical radiation safety and pertinent regulations.
General knowledge of computers and their applications in diagnostic imaging.
Good communication skills, demonstrated customer service skills and willingness to be part of a team.
Must be able to work in a Labor/Management Partnership environment.
