Organizational Unit Overview
Department of Radiation Oncology at the Brody School of Medicine is part of the Health Sciences Division at East Carolina University, a member of the University of North Carolina state school system. Department faculty are actively involved in multidisciplinary disease teams to provide clinical care, research, and teaching of medical students and fellows. The Department co-sponsors an accredited Medical Physics graduate program and residency with the ECU Department of Physics. The Department has four affiliated community practices in North Carolina on an integrated ARIA/Eclipse network, facilitating coordination of care and quality standardization.
The Brody School of Medicine is closely affiliated with Vidant Health System, whose flagship tertiary hospital, Vidant Medical Center, provides the primary teaching hospital for the medical school. In March 2018, Vidant Medical Center opened the Eddie and Jo Allison Smith Cancer Tower, which is a 6-story, 96-bed, 418,000 square foot cancer center. This center includes a radiation oncology clinical department, called Vidant Radiation Oncology, which is among the most state of the art in the Southeastern region. Technologies in the department include: three Varian TrueBeam linear accelerators equipped with Optical Surface Imaging; respiratory gating and 6DoF couch; an M6 CyberKnife; an HDR brachytherapy suite; a GE CT simulator; GammaTile therapy; Y-90 liver directed therapy; radiopharmaceuticals; and a fifth vault configured for an MRI linear accelerator. The outpatient facility also houses multispecialty clinics, a 60-chair infusion center, patient support services, a women’s imaging center, pharmacy, conference space, and healing gardens. The integrated bed tower accommodates all oncology inpatients in the floors above the ambulatory facility. The medical center also houses a Gamma Knife Icon unit in a separate facility with a dedicated MRI and patient support space.
The Radiation Oncology clinic within the Eddie and Jo Allison Smith Cancer Tower, called Vidant Radiation Oncology, LLC, is a joint venture between Vidant Health and GenesisCare. The clinical services provided by the candidate hired to this ECU faculty position will be performed in the Vidant Radiation Oncology clinic, and in the Vidant Medical Center Gamma Knife facility.
