Post-Doctoral Fellow

Position Description:

A postdoctoral research positions are available in the Department of Radiation Oncology, at the University of Washington, Seattle.  The term of appointment is one-year beginning on approximately July 1, 2022 with possible extension of up to two years. This research focus for this position is an NCI-funded project to design and develop a radiation therapy system specifically designed for use in low- and middle-income countries where cancer has emerged as one of the most important public health problems. This project has two prongs: 1) develop a novel compensator-based IMRT system which provides high-efficiency delivery, and 2) deliver an automatic treatment planning solution optimized for the low- and middle-income country setting. The postdoctoral fellow will focus on the modeling, development and testing of the device, including Monte Carlo simulations, treatment planning studies and dosimetry tests in collaboration with partner sites in India, and will help develop the automatic treatment planning solution and AI-based dose prediction in collaboration with researchers at MD Anderson Cancer Center.

The fellow will also participate in clinical service within the department under the direction of Dr. Ford and the medical physics team to help build clinical medical physics skills.

The candidate should have a Ph.D. degree in physics, medical physics or biomedical engineering. Candidates with the following background are preferred: (1) strong interest in research in radiation oncology and experience in data analysis and processing; (2) exposure to clinical radiation oncology physics; (3) solid mathematical/physics background, and computer programming skills; programming experience with Monte Carlo modeling is preferred.

Facility and Environment:

The Department of Radiation Oncology treats over 160 patients per day in a strong multimodality program.  The Department has 30 faculty physicists and administers a CAMPEP-accredited medical physics residency program with two residents recruited per year through the Medical Physics Match Program. Radiation delivery equipment includes  10 linear accelerators, IGRT-capability, a Mobetron intra-operative accelerator, GammaKnife, HDR Brachytherapy Suite, a Scanditronix fast neutron therapy facility and  proton beam facility with gantry and incline beam capability.
