POSITION SUMMARY: Assists Radiation Safety Officer with implementation and oversight of the radiation safety program, including all pertinent licensure or registration of radioactive materials or radiation-producing machines. Provides overall assurance of diagnostic image quality and minimum patient/personnel radiation dosage through periodic measurements, testing, quality control, and auditing.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: Qualified individuals must have the ability (with or without reasonable accommodation) to perform the following duties:
Radiation Safety Duties
Maintain all State radioactive materials licenses as current and in compliance with pertinent requirements.
Maintain all State certificates of registration of radiation-producing machines and linear accelerator licenses as current and in compliance with pertinent requirements.
Maintain and improve upon the radiation safety program through policy and procedure development, enforcement measures, appropriately frequent audits, tests, and measurements.
Attend and participate in Radiation Safety Committee. Provide the Committee with information relative to the radiation safety program, including new procedures, sources, or radiation –producing machines, and documentation for review of potential authorized users or medical physicists to be included on licensure.
Assist in implementing or overseeing an occupational radiation dosimetry program for all appropriate radiation workers to include distribution and collection of dosimeters, analysis of exposure readings, maintenance of dosimeter records, and reporting of results to the Radiation Safety Committee, administrators, and individuals.
Assist in implementing an ALARA program that maintains worker’s occupational radiation doses as low as reasonably achievable. Report ALARA information to the Radiation Safety Committee quarterly, with a summary report at least annually.
Assist in implementing and/or overseeing that all radiation measuring or analyzing instruments are properly maintained and calibrated so as to meet State and Federal regulations for measurement accuracy and reliability.
Assist in developing and maintaining policies and procedures in the case of emergency involving radioactive material or radiation-producing machines. Assist in ensuring that all parties involved in such policies/procedures are appropriately trained in their implementation.
Conduct or oversee radiation safety training for all radiation workers on a frequency which is consistent with State and Federal regulations and/or recommendations from such agencies as the joint Commission on the Accreditation of Health Organizations (JCAHO), or others.
Perform, or arrange to have performed, periodic surveys and measurements of ambient radiation levels in occupational and public areas, so as to meet State and Federal requirements and to otherwise maintain a safe working environment.
Assist in conducting and maintaining an inventory of all radioactive sources in the systems, with a review and update of the inventory performed at least quarterly. On at least a semi-annual basis conduct or oversee the testing of all eligible sealed radioactive sources for leakage.
Assist in overseeing and/or implementing the proper disposal of all radioactive waste generated by the facility.
Assist in establishing and implementing programs to ensure the safe administration of therapeutic quantities of radioactive material or machine produced radiation, and audit such programs periodically through review of actual procedure information and data.
Serve as a source of information on radiation safety and regulatory issues, biological effects of radiation, and radiation dosimetry to administrators, medical and dental staff, employees, and patients.
Ensure that adequate radiation safety equipment and supplies are provided to radiation workers, and further ensure that they are in proper working order or condition through testing or other means
Diagnostic Medical Physicist
Provide information, data, and reports on the radiation shielding implications of the installation or replacement of any radiation-producing machine in an existing or new room or facility. Provide follow-up measurements of new installations or facilities to ensure that adequate shielding integrity has been installed per recommendations and regulatory requirements.
Perform or oversee acceptance testing of all diagnostic radiological equipment after installation and prior to first medical use, to ensure the safe and effective operation of the equipment.
Perform or oversee periodic testing of all existing radiological equipment, at al frequency determined by regulatory agencies or recommending agencies such as the JCAHO, American College of Radiology (ACR), or American Association of Physicists in Medicine (AAPM).
Report the findings and results of all testing to the RSO/Chief Diagnostic Medical Physicist in written format. The reporting shall be in a timely manner.
Assist in developing and implementing or overseeing Quality Control procedures designed to optimize the quality of diagnostic images while minimizing patient and personnel radiation dose.
As needed, provide calculations to determine the absorbed radiation dose to a patient or the embryo/fetus of a patient.
Assist in providing all necessary activities to ensure compliance with ACR accreditation programs throughout the system, to include conducting periodic measurements and tests, review of technologist QC data or documentation, and completion of pertinent forms.
MINIMUM REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
Master’s degree or higher in physics, medical physics, health physics, or similar discipline.
Meets the minimum qualification requirements of the Pennsylvania DEP or other regulatory agencies for radiation safety officers.
Meets minimum qualification requirements of the American College of Radiology (ACR) or other accrediting body for a medical physicist.
Board-certification by the American Board of Radiology or American Board of Health Physics must be obtained within seven (7) years of initial eligibility for application.
Participation in a CAMPEP approved medical physics residency program, or acceptable internship experience from a reputable institution.
