The Department of Radiation Oncology at the University of Alabama at Birmingham is recruiting for a radiotherapy physicist at the rank of Assistant or Associate Professor, non-tenured track with rank determined according to experience, funding, and publication track record of the successful candidate. To be considered, applicants must hold a Ph.D. in physics or closely related field, be certified by the American Board of Radiology in Therapeutic Medical Physics or have completed an accredited residency and be ABR board eligible, and able to demonstrate a record of scholarly achievement.
The successful candidate will be expected to participate in all facets of radiation oncology physics clinical support and quality assurance at the primary center and satellite sites as needed. Furthermore, the candidate will team with faculty within the department and work collaboratively with investigators across the School of Medicine, UAB, and peer academic departments to develop a clinically meaningful and scholarly rich research program for radiation oncology.
Our team consists of seven Ph.D. physicists and 14 radiation oncologists, assisted by seven dosimetrists. We train ten radiation oncology and two medical physics residents in our CAMPEP-accredited program. We routinely provide physics services for 90+ patients per day at our main campus and 80+ patients per day across our extension clinics. Procedures include IMRT, VMAT, IGRT, respiratory gating, stereotactic radiosurgery, SRS, SBRT, interstitial and intracavitary HDR, 125-I eyeplaques, and TBI with photons and electrons.
We utilize Varian accelerators (one TrueBeam STx, one Edge, three iX with RapidArc and cone beam CT, one Cl-21EX with cone beam CT and OBI, and one CL-21EX with OBI), a Phillips Brilliance Big Bore and a GE Lightspeed CT simulator, an Acuity simulator, a Varian Varisource 200 HDR unit, a superficial X-ray unit, as well as an assortment of 137-Cs sources. Our external beam and brachytherapy treatment planning systems and record and verify system are Varian products. Additionally, we are excited about our new proton facility that is under construction and anticipate the first patient treatments to begin in January 2020.
