Provides medical physics support to the Department of Radiation Oncology including treatment planning, equipment calibrations, QC and QA measurements, patient dosimetry and new procedure development. Provides medical physics support to conventional radiation therapy as well as the Gamma Knife, HDR, IORT and other advanced treatment modalities. Demonstrates competence in all treatment modalities offered. Provides consultation services to the physician staff on medical physics issues. Works with Chief Physicist to maintain compliance with applicable state and federal radiation regulations. Interfaces with information services and demonstrates a clear understanding and knowledge of computer applications and systems related to Radiation Therapy. Projects an image of professionalism in communication, appearance and conduct. Supports the radiation oncology/gamma knife mission. Participates in the continuous quality improvement process. Maintains a working knowledge of departmental standard operating procedures. This knowledge includes the use of specialized instrumentation, Quality Control requirements and preventive maintenance. Performs other duties as assigned.
Performs radiation safety surveys, radioactive material surveys and radioactive material inventories. Consults with physicians on special dosimetry needs, special treatment devices, unique patient treatment plans and all medical physics issues.
Performs patient radiation dosimetry measurements as requested by physicians.
Troubleshoots and reports malfunctioning equipment and performs minor repairs on equipment.
Takes responsibility for follow-up with manufacturer and service personnel.
Supervises the treatment planning and radiation delivery process in consultation with physicians.
In consultation with the chief physicist provides guidance and consultation for the dosimetry section.
Participates in the treatment planning, preparation, insertion and removal of radioactive materials during brachytherapy procedures for low dose and high dose rate procedures.
Provides medical physics support to the Gamma Knife.
Consults with industry vendors and suppliers concerning updates, upgrades and clinical usage of equipment.
Provides medical physics support to other hospital departments as assigned.
Maintains current and complete records of all regulatory compliance tests, surveys, calibrations and documentation.
Performs radiation safety surveys and radioactive material surveys and inventories. Provides training and instruction in radiation safety procedures as assigned or as needed for new technologies or staff.

Consults with the chief physicist, department medical director and department manager in the development of department policies, procedures, strategic planning and new technologies.
Develops new treatment techniques and implements new treatment approaches and technologies.
Prepares documentation, procedures and support materials.
Calculates shielding requirements, works with manufacturers on installation and acceptance testing of new equipment.
Provides current education programs and lectures on radiation issues, new technologies, new procedures and radiation safety issues for Hoag staff, community groups and conferences.
Provides technical reports, statistical and patient data as requested.
Works with Hoag IS in the maintenance of existing computer systems and the installation and development of new technologies.
Participates in departmental quality improvement activities.
Participates in the training of new employees and offers guidance, assistance and direction to less experienced personnel.
Clinical Care: Ensure that quality patient care is delivered to all patients on a 24-hour basis, and the unit is maintained in accordance with professional and regulatory standards and the philosophy and goals of Hoag.
Perform other duties as assigned.
Education, Training and Experience
Required: Minimum of Master’s Degree in Medical Physics or closely related field. 5+ years post training experience in Radiation Oncology Medical Physics
Preferred: Ph.D. in Medical Physics preferred or closely related field, 10+ years post training experience
Skills or Other Qualifications
Required: Excellent computer skills. Knowledge of medical physics instrumentation. Demonstrates effective communication, interpersonal skills, organizational ability, knowledge of proper body mechanics, safety measures and infection control, ability to follow instructions. MUST be a team player.
Preferred: Experience with MR and CT QA and the following software: MOSAIQ, Pinnacle, HDR, Tomotherapy, RayStation, XOFT, and Gamma Knife. Experience with ViewRay is a plus.
License and Certifications
Required: Board Certified (ABR or ABMP)
