Medical Physics: Diagnostic Imaging, Medical Physics: Health Physics/Radiation Safety
The University of New Mexico has one opening for a diagnostic medical physics resident starting June 2019. The 24-month residency is administered by the Department of Radiology and includes rotations in image display, general radiography, fluoroscopy, interventional/angiography, mammography, CT, MRI, ultrasound, imaging informatics, and nuclear medicine. Each rotation will include aspects of radiation protection and safety in radiology; patient dose assessments; professionalism, communication, ethics, and leadership; research and education; technology management; and clinical awareness.
UNM Hospital houses the only Level I Trauma Center in the state and also features primary and subspecialty adult and pediatric care, along with an NCI Comprehensive Cancer Center. Our patient mix provides an unparalleled range of radiology imaging services and diagnostic imaging equipment. In addition, UNM provides medical physics services to rural communities as part of an outreach program. The residency program will prepare residents to operate in diverse imaging environments under Joint Commission or ACR oversight and with various levels of research and educational responsibilities.
The program is CAMPEP accredited and will accept graduates from a CAMPEP-accredited graduate program. The Department of Radiology maintains a broad range of imaging equipment from several vendors such as Siemens, Philips, GE, Fuji, Carestream, and Hologic. The resident will have access to interventional and fluoroscopy suites in the operating room, cardiology, and interventional radiology; MRI scanners at 1.5 and 3T; CT scanners with single and dual sources; mammography with 2D, DBT, C-view and stereotactic breast biopsy; general x-ray with CR and DR technologies; multiple c-arms and mini c-arms; several ultrasound machines; gamma cameras, a dedicated cardiac camera, SPECT/CT, and PET/CT scanners; and imaging informatics with several reading room configurations, various imaging applications, and clinical and research PACS. The resident will gain experience in small clinics, large hospitals, stand-alone outpatient imaging centers, and enterprise imaging informatics.
