Medical Physics: Radiation Oncology
Currently, MSKCC has immediate openings for:
Up to six Radiotherapy Physicists in the External Beam Treatment Planning group at our Main Campus facility and the David H Koch Center on 74th Street due to open next year. The Main Campus operates 10 accelerators (Varian TrueBeam, IX and EX machines) and is staffed with 27 planners (MS physicists and dosimetrists), 9 faculty level physicists, 5 senior MS level physicists, 2 research study assistants, and one treatment planning coordinator. The David H. Koch Center will operate a TrueBeam and a Philips Unity MR-Linac and be staffed with 3 faculty level physicists, a Master’s Level project physicist, and 4 planners (MS Physicists and Dosimetrists).
As a Radiotherapy Physicist, you will:
Provide treatment planning services including graphical planning with special emphasis on IMRT/VMAT, IGRT, SRS and SBRT techniques. Consult with radiation oncologists, therapists and physicists from other facilities and department sections as needed.
Advise on and interpret pertinent information obtained during patient simulation. At treatment delivery, ensure correct implementation of radiation treatment plans.
Perform QA procedures including initial, weekly and end-of-treatment chart checks completely and accurately according to departmental policy and procedures. Participate in other quality assurance procedures as needed including review of dose calculations and computer systems consistent with MSK guidelines.
Under supervision of senior radiotherapy physicists, assess and test new treatment protocols, treatment planning strategies and new computer software for radiotherapy applications across facilities.
Teach and demonstrate principles of treatment planning according to departmental policies and procedures to junior staff, residents and others as directed.
Treat individuals (e.g., patient/family, client, Center employee) who depend on the quality, accuracy and timeliness of the work as unique individuals in a respectful, courteous manner, and focuses on understanding and meeting their needs.
To qualify, you must have:
Master’s degree in physics or related physical science.
Educational, residency and experience requirements to sit for ABR certification in therapeutic radiological physics.
A minimum of 2.0 years of experience as a radiotherapy physicist is preferred.
The ability to evaluate and resolve clinical issues, perform mathematical calculations and understand the principles of radiotherapy physics. Knowledge of computers and familiarity with treatment planning systems is essential.
MSKCC is a world leader in cancer care and on the forefront of innovative technologies and approaches in radiotherapy. MSK Radiation Oncology and Medical Physics programs are spread across six facilities including our Manhattan campus on the Upper East Side, one facility in Westchester County, two in Long island and two in New Jersey. A third New Jersey facility will open in early to mid-2018. Campus wide, we treat approximately 550 cancer patients per day. The Clinical Physics Service is staffed with over 90 physicists and planners providing a rich, stimulating work environment. New programs in radiation oncology and medical physics include advanced treatment planning optimization algorithms, integration of MR and PET imaging into radiotherapy decision making and treatment planning, 4D imaging and motion management, and the development of adaptive radiotherapy processes (www.mskcc.org/departments/medical-physics). Resources include twenty-four linear accelerators, six HDR units, eight CT Simulators, one PET/CT Simulator and one MRI Simulator, as well as state-of-the-art inter- and intra-fractional imaging and motion management capabilities.
