Medical Physics: Radiation Oncology
The Division of Medical Physics in the Department of Radiation Oncology at the University of Maryland School of Medicine is recruiting a qualified Proton Physicist at the Assistant or Associate Professor level for the Maryland Proton Treatment Center (MPTC).
The medical physics group at the MPTC is responsible for the accurate and safe delivery of proton therapy in four gantry rooms that are equipped with pencil beam scanning nozzles, dual x-ray imaging tubes as well as CBCT functionality. A fifth fixed beam room is being commissioned. Starting in the spring of 2018 the Department will expand it hyperthermia program to deep seated targets. The faculty is expected to support both, the proton as well as the thermal therapy programs. As a member of the Medical Physics Division of the Department of Radiation Oncology the candidate will participate in the ongoing teaching and mentoring of physician residents, medical physics residents, as well as dosimetry students and post-doctoral fellows. The candidate is expected to demonstrate academic productivity in the form of publications in peer-reviewed literature.
Facility and Equipment
The Medical Physics Division is currently comprised of 24 faculty physicists, 19 dosimetrists, 2 physics residents, 9 post-doctoral fellows and graduate students and 4 system administrators and 2 application programmers. The Department of Radiation Oncology at the University of Maryland provides a full range of clinical services at the University of Maryland Medical Center and its community practice centers. The department has 5 well-integrated community programs, including the Maryland Proton Treatment Center. All practice sites are connected via a telemedicine network facilitating frequent interactions between facilities. The MPTC is equipped with a Varian ProBeam system. The first patient was treated in February of 2016 and since then more than 800 patients have been treated at our center. The MPTC is also equipped with a dual energy CT scanner and a 1.5 T MRI unit. A microwave-based hypothermia unit will be installed in February of this year. This state-of-the-art facility is currently staffed with 7 medical physics faculty, 3 physics assistants, and 9 dosimetrists. Research programs include the development of new treatment planning and delivery techniques, tumor motion management and inter-fraction image guidance strategies. The division of medical physics has research space co-located with our Division of Translational Radiation Sciences (DTRS).
The successful candidate will join a medical physics team that is responsible for all clinical medical physics aspects such as commissioning, quality assurance, and treatment planning support. In addition, the medical physics team leads many activities that are inherent to the advancement of a newer clinical facility such as the implementation of new treatment planning and delivery protocols, motion management techniques, and the establishment of efficient QA protocols. All faculty within the Department of Radiation Oncology also contribute to the research and educational mission of the institution. Educational opportunities range from didactic teaching of physician and medical physics residents to mentoring of junior colleagues.
The MPTC is integrated with the Department of Radiation Oncology’s clinical program which consists of 23 physicians inclusive of fellows and physician scientists. The main academic patient care facility is located at the University of Maryland Medical Center (UMMC) in downtown Baltimore, within the University of Maryland Greenebaum Comprehensive Cancer Center and close to the main attractions of the Inner Harbor waterfront and professional sports stadiums. The MPTC is located in the University of Maryland’s BioPark and is within easy walking distance to the University’s Medical Center. Our current clinical program includes 11 linear accelerators, 5 multi-slice large bore CT simulators with 4D capabilities, 2 HDR units, a Gamma Knife; and active programs in conformal radiotherapy, IMRT, IGRT, Hyperthermia Therapy, Brachytherapy and SRS/SBRT. In addition, there are several campus-wide shared resources including small-animal imaging CT, PET and MR scanners.
Basic research is organized through an extremely well-funded DTRS, which has 16 dedicated research faculty members with grant-funded programs in aspects of cellular responses to DNA damage and molecular biology, as well as preclinical in vivo models of radiation effects on normal tissue. Resources include overall office and lab space of 19,197 sq. ft. inclusive of 1,000 sq. ft. machine shop.
Our clinical facilities are state-of-the-art and are surrounded by beautiful parks, wonderful walking, hiking and biking trails. They are within 25 miles of our main facility in downtown Baltimore, close to the Inner Harbor waterfront, professional sports stadiums a myriad of museums, musical and dramatic arts venues and BWI airport. In addition, the heart of Washington DC with all its cultural, historic and entertainment options are a short car ride or train ride away.
