The Department of Radiation Oncology at the Wilmot Cancer Institute of the University of Rochester Medical Center seeks qualified candidates for a leadership position -- Director of Medical Physics -- at the Associate Professor or Professor academic rank level.
The Department of Radiation Oncology at the University of Rochester Medical Center provides high quality and advanced cancer treatment technology to patients in the academic medical center and in regional community-based practices of the greater Rochester region of upstate New York. The Department oversees 7 radiation cancer treatment sites with approximately 3000 new radiation treatment cases each year. All 7 sites are accredited by American College of Radiology for quality and safety measures. The DRO is prominently noted for its Stereotactic Radiosurgery program; Late Effects in Normal Tissue Studies; and Total Skeletal and Total Lymphatic Irradiation programs. The Department has a long-standing history of clinical trial enrollment and is a full member with NRG Oncology/RTOG.
There are a total of 12 linear accelerators (Varian, Elekta, Tomotherapy, and Brainlab/ Novalis), 6 CT scanners, and two Oncentra HDR brachytherapy delivery systems in the enterprise. The Medical Physics division currently has 11 faculty physicists, 14 dosimetrists, and works closely with in-house engineers and IT support. The Director of Medical Physics will oversee the performance and quality assurance of the clinical physics operations and research activities in Medical Physics, as well as in clinical trials of NRG/RTOG and others. Responsibilities include supervision of clinical QA, treatment planning, special procedures, and technical support for a range of advanced procedures including VMAT, IMRT, SRS, SBRT, and HDR. In addition, Medical Physicists participate in the training program in support of the department’s Medical Residency Program.
The Director should have strong communication skills, interpersonal and interdisciplinary relationship-building skills, technology assessment and advancement skills, and management experience (budgeting, cost containment, staffing assessment, process improvement, etc.). Mentoring junior faculty experience, and/or funded research experience are favored. Knowledge and/or experience with the following equipment is preferred: linear accelerators (with on-board imaging systems), TomoTherapy, CT-simulators, treatment planning systems (Varian Eclipse, TomoTherapy Planning, Brainlab iPlan), MRI, and PET/CT.
