The Department of Radiation Oncology at St. Jude is seeking a candidate for a two-year postdoctoral research position. This is an outstanding opportunity to join a renowned team with access to world-class resources, including the world’s first proton therapy center with pencil beam scanning technology designated solely for the treatment of pediatric cancer, the first worldwide installation of detector-based spectral CT in a Radiation Oncology Department, and state-of-the-art 1.5T and 3T MR scanners. In the near future, a dedicated PET/CT will be included in the imaging portfolio.
The main research topics this candidate would be directly involved with include:
- conducting focused research related to biological optimization of proton radiotherapy treatment plans
- development of a Monte Carlo second check system for proton radiotherapy plans
- investigating relationships between linear energy transfer (LET) and toxicity events in pediatric patients
- establishing a comprehensive database of pediatric proton radiotherapy patients at St. Jude
The postdoctoral fellow will work closely with the PIs, computational scientists, and students in the research group. The fellow will interact with radiation oncologists, IT support staff, clinical therapy and physics staff, and clinical scientists. Research activities include data collection, image analysis, dosimetry comparisons in treatment planning systems and Monte Carlo calculations, experimental validation with proton beams, and report and manuscript writing. Opportunities to gain clinical experience in proton and photon radiotherapy physics can be made available to fellows making adequate progress in their research work.
The candidate is required to have a PhD or DSc degree in Medical Physics, Biomedical Engineering, Radiological Sciences, or other relevant engineering and physical sciences. The candidate should have strong knowledge and experience in analytical and scientific programming skills (e.g. Matlab, IDL, Python, Java), excellent written and verbal communication skills (as demonstrated through a track record of publications and conference presentations), experience with Monte Carlo dose calculations (familiarity with TOPAS desirable), and a working knowledge of radiation oncology physics. Experience specific to proton radiotherapy is desirable but not required.
